Mike's Last Visit

Isabel & I made our annual October trip to Gatlinburg this week.  Got here on Wednesday, blew down the driveway and raked the rest to the street.  This is pretty important.  It had rained and the leaves are slippery and the nuts are a trip hazard.  Did a few other odds and ends then got the traditional Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner.  Thursday, Isabel took Mom to the Wild Plum and I went to Gatlinburg Golf Course.  Mom had a blast getting out of the house on a social visit, Dad enjoyed the peace and quiet and I shot a 94 which was better than the score indicated (I parred both Par 5s on the front and the first three holes on the back, but really blew four holes). Traffic was bad in Gatlinburg, so Isabel and I went to Joe's Crab Sahack in Pigeon Forge, mom and Dad enjoyed KFC again, and we called it a day.  On Friday I played the Sevierville Golf Course River Course (formerly Eagle's Landing) and shot a 92 which I felt was worse than the 94 at Gatlinburg.  The course is wide open, and I couldn't hit a fairway.  Good thing, I increased the number of balls in dad's bag- Golf balls and golf bags for those of you who are picturing something else GROSS!  Isabel went strolling through Gatlinburg and even she suggested we stay out of town, so we ate at the Alamo.  We finished watching Remington Steele with M&D.  Today Isabel is out to Five Oaks, I have at least three chore to do, then I will try taking a shower (for those who remember the time we had a reunion here and Dad didn't want me to dirty the shower, so I took a rag from the garage and wiped myself down with it) and do laundry.  We're leaving Sunday after Church.

While here, I transferred slides to JPEG files.  I started when I came out here the first time and have gotten through 1967.  I got to say, Mack you didn't like shirts did you!  Now I have pictures to hold over every one of my brother's and sister's head!!!

I would like to suggest that we all try coming out here in an organized fashion about every 6-8 weeks for a couple of days.  Not because M&D are dying, but because they need stuff done around the house and Mom needs to get out.  She is doing much better than the last visit, but still prefers the walker aound the house.  Dad doesn't want to leave the house and Mom is getting stir crazy in it.  Isabel described Mom as a "puppy sticking her head out of the car window on her ride around town".  Also, Mom doesn't feel good enough to cook for visitors and they didn't mind when we had plans to eat out.  She was bugged that I bought the KFC.

When I get done with the slides (probably in three more visits), I will leave a CD at M&Ds.  That way if you want the pictures, you'll have to come down and visit them!  Until next visit......

Mom Revisited

I have a business trip next week in Huntsville, AL and was in Charlottesville VA Friday, so the government told me to spend the weekend in Huntsville, so I came to Gatlinburg (4 hours away) for Sat and Sun.  I did a few things:
     - Fixed Mom's extension cord
     - Replaced the mail box (the old one was plastic and the hinge broke)
     - Fixed Mom's leaf Blower
     - Moved the refridgerator and cleaned behind it
     - Moved the basment couch and vacuumed behind it
     - Moved the sewing machine so mom could oil it
     - Bought M&D KFC for Dad's birthday, cake and all

I haven't seen much improvement in Mom.  She is still using the walker and is slumped over when she is on the sticks.  I think she left PT too early.  She is complaining about some hip discomfort (and won't have her hip worked on).  I think more PT with some weight training to strengthen her legs and back is needed.  Her back is still weak.  Not a Doc, just a Jock though.

Tomorrow is Church (Gotta get there before some asshole form Florida takes the handicap spot!- Guess who said that?)  then I am trying to get them out for breakfast before I head back to Huntsville.

Later.

Mom continues to do good

Just talked to mom. She went to the doc and they x-rayed her and everything looks good. Mom looked at a vertebrate three or four or higher and was concerned.  Doc said that it doesn't affect anything which is true. He liked the sticks and was messing around with them. A man she didn't know approached mom and said you're a hiker  (then she went on about the surgery). The manager at food city approached her and said her son could really use those poles because he had surgery on his calf (mom told her to go to the hiking store to pick them up.) Mom is starting a trend. I explained that I have another set and to keep those. I think that she finally realizes that those poles are better than the walking stick that she had.

She mentioned that she uses the walker in the house still but that is okay until she is completely comfortable on the poles. I was giving her ideas on how to use the poles, laundry, and using the black cart etc..... She is listening.

Just wanted let you know that the doc doesn't want to see her for six months. Surgery was considered successful. He told her no more pt.

Take care

Limo to Gatlinburg

Marciah - how was that limo ride to the airport?  Was it worth it?  Cost?  Time to get there?  Would you do it again?  Mom called to tell me it appeared to be a good ride, but she hasn't heard the end of the story!

Hickory Nuts & Matthew

Like the idea of Hickory Nuts - we all experienced it!  And since you suggested we all pitch in about our lives - guess what I saw this weekend (speaking of nuts)?  I'm a big fan of Matthey McConaughey, so I went to see MAGIC MIKE!  OMG - Isabel, what did you think of it?!?!?  Terrible ending (pardon the pun), and a quite unexpected beginning!  But oh, do those boys DANCE!  Channing Tatum - oh my!

Who saw this yet?  Guys - not allowed to comment!

What Happens to this Blog?

I will answer that question by asking you another question. What do you want to happen to this blog? 1390 views since it was started a month ago. Rondah & I have enjoyed reading daily everybody's caregiving experience with Laverne's rehabilitation. We enjoyed reading it as much as we had enjoyed writing in it those first few days before during and after Laverne's surgery. Our hope is it would continue and expand to include different topics besides mice. All members of the family including our children should be invited and encouraged to opine.I think I can change the title. The Bernard Family Blog? How about Eeek Mice? Mice eating underpants, chair stuffing and running around the ceiling was a common theme of the past blog. Maybe, we should call it Hickory Nuts since we all took turns blowing the driveway and had our fill of those damm nuts. I still haven't recovered from the couple that hit me in the head. Hickory Nuts sounds appropriate.I imagine that the purpose of the blog would be to tell our stories. Stories that would be told to each other if we all still lived in Chicago and were having family get togethers on a regular basis at weekend barbeques and holiday events. Stories that are not told because we live to far apart. Sheena's wedding made Rondah and I realize how much we have missed those family get togethers. Maybe, you just want to let others know that you saw a great movie, brag about your football team, or vent about a bad experience with a company. The only thing that should be avoided is politics and religion since we want to avoid family feuds as well. Writing can be cathartic. Maybe, this blog can serve that purpose too. The blog will only work if you provide something to read on a regular basis. Technology has made it easy to read or write on this blog. I just hit the orange B on my smart phone and I can read or write something with a touch of a button. These last few weeks I have probably checked the blog twice a day. Thank you for the updates. So, let me know what you think about continuing the blog and who else you would like me to invite to contribute. The URL would stay the same. Hmmm, Hickory Nuts.

Child Support Has Ended....

A round of applause for all!  I think everyone did a remarkable job doing their "duty" to love and serve thy parents.  After reading all the blogs, I quite honestly think my "tour of duty" was the least rewarding to them, because after reading all these notes each and every one of you played a HUGE influence on Mom's support.

Rondah & Chuck - BRAVO!  You both were the absolute best choice to getting Mom to the hospital, being there for the surgery, and being there for Dad.  Rondah - you were able to calm both M&D because of your past surgical experiece, provide emotional and physical strength through her toughest times, and provide the "tools" needed to get her through this.  Chuck - you were instrumental in helping Dad understand and comprehend what's happening, calming his nerves, and preparing this Blog!  There couldn't have been a better choice here.  Thank you so much for pulling the first week.  You helped the sibblings as well calming us in knowing and understanding what she's going through.

Sheilah - In my opinion, the absolute person to be with Mom and Dad during her 1st week home.  Again, couldn't have been a better plan!  I know Mom was reassured you were there - you eased her mind on the sutures, meds, sugar content, her weight, etc.  You met her surgeon which made all of us (and Dad) glad and comforted in knowing he did good.  Understand you met Dr. Moore and was able to talk with her.  Your medical expertise has played a huge part in this and we're all greatful for that as well.  Thank you, too, for getting the Handicap Placard (it was you, right?) as they so needed that, that first change of bed linens and shopping.  Oh, can't forget your love of those hickory nuts, and your worthy instructional lessons from Chuck on the workings of an Ipod!  We all enjoyed watching (and hearing) how you've masterfully accomplished that skill!  And by the way, you should know, Mom does look forward to your daily calls - it comforts her, it really does!

Patrick - you may have felt awarkward, but believe me, Mom told me numerous times how much you helped them out!  It was good to have a guy there for Dad - he appreciated that, too.  During your duty, you started taking time off, giving them more freedom which I think was the start of their next road to recovery.  That proved well - timing was perfect.  You got to do duties that helped them out, which proved she was getting back to normal by now.  Thank you for bringing Andrew with you so they could enjoy not only their son, but their grandson!  Got their mind off a few things with Andrew there!  The only concern Mom had was your long drive home from Atlanta in one trip!!! You know that - I saw Mom's anxiety not knowing if you got home safely or not!  But once you called to say you made it home - instant relief!  And, the fact that the Cubs beat Atlanta made Dad happy!!!  Oh, tell Andrew that I, too, heard the little pitter-patter of the mice feet in the basement ceiling!

My turn was actually a cooking experience!  I really believe Mom enjoyed "teaching" me how to cook!  I made (with Mom's instructional guidance) two meals which turned out wonderful.  My "tour" was actually uneventful, mostly daily chores which got her and Dad back on track.  Grocery shopping, liquor store run, laundry, bed changing, linens, ironing, plant watering, deck sweeping, but more importantly, sharing moments watching 4th of July parade (twice!) and Boston Fireworks.  She really enjoyed that.  Lived through a severe storm which unfortunatly killed 2 people on Abrams Falls (tree fell on them during hike when freak storm hit), and the total destruction of Sieverville's Douglas Dam Marina.  Thankfully no power outages in Gatlinburg, but brought to mind what would happen if they did lose power - no fridge, freezer, lights, etc.  My duty was to strengthen Mom in using the Sticks - keep her on the walker for balance, but start strenghening her on the sticks.  Knowing we had just 2 more child-support visits, I wanted her to know how to use the sticks comfortably.

Mike - another Son visit - I instantly saw how Dad took to you.  He really does like having male companionship.  Perfect timing, again!  We couldn't have planned this any better!  You presented them more privacy than any one of us had.  You stayed at the hotel all the time, giving them insight to what life was going to be like in one more week.  You fixed my errors (by replacing the sink nozzle....thank you, thank you, thank you!), and provided support when needed.  Most importantly - thank you for bringing both of them to church on Sunday.  Mom hadn't been to mass in quite a long time and she so desparately wanted to go.  Sorry your breakfast wasn't the best (those dang kids at McD's, hah?  Gving you an empty breakfast container).  Best it happened to you than Dad!  And Marciah so appreaciates you picking her up at the airport.  That was a blessing in itself.  Glad you made it home and can relax your injured leg.  Surprised you made the entire trip without letting word out to them you were in a plastic cast!

And Marciah - our last caregiver.  Oh my gosh, it seems like you got the worst of the deal with all the mice issues!  Your blogs were so comical!  Eee-gads!  You are so brave to tackle and deal with those "things"!  You had bathroom duty, and am so sorry the Sarge was watching over you!  Great comment to Mom about the cleaning lady will only wash the toliet once and that they're pros who know how to do this!  You must have worked the hardest to work up a sweat!  I never got to that point!  But you know, I think you're "job" must have been an important one, too, because you knew you were the last care-giver.  That meant you had to make sure Mom and Dad were comfortable on their own from this point on.  You have to ensure all of us that Mom is "good to go", or that she has most of her strength back, and that before you left, that all was in it's rightful place ready to continue on.  You brough humor to all by writing of mom's crazy go-cart rides in the grocery store - that was great!  I would have never thought of doing that!  Great job!

I can only speak for myself - when I left them, I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat.  I muffled a sob as I hugged them good-bye.  Mike was witness to that.  I had a wonderful experience with them, I'm glad I was able to be there on a one-to-one basis.  It tore my heart to wave good-bye to Mom from her bedroom window - did she do that with you all?  Say good-bye upstairs, then :race" to her bedroom and knock on the bedroom window, as she leaned on her walker, wave good-bye?  How touching - a Mother's love will always be within.

A stresfull month has passed.  Today is 7/15, her surgery was 6/20, but I know on 6/15 I was stressing out on the outcome and unknown results.  It's over, recovery still in process, but worries over.  Collectively, we all did it.  Each one of us should be patted on the back - job well done.

Now Chuck - it's in your hands - what happens now to this Blog?!?!?

Mouse source...

...and dryer problems. After talking to Pat yesterday I checked out the dryer vent issue. Sounds like there is history of clothes taking a while to dry. Apparently Chuck found the outdoor screen vent and closed it. Pat later found it clogged with lint outdoors.

Mom absolutely insisted that screen stay closed, so after my load today I went out and found it was again covered with lint after 1 single load.

I pulled back the dryer and pulled some lint from the tubing and reattached it to the dryer...however, in the process I found a huge pile of mouse turds and sunflower shells and other 'stuff'. I vacuumed it up, and made sure mom saw what was going on as they have an exterminator that comes once a month. I sent text pics to Sheilah, Norah, and rondah. Mom was so insistent that i push the dryer as far back as it was... but this time I stood up to her and told her it was so close to the wall the venting was compressed and I think it was causing lint to get trapped within it. She hung her head in her hands, I mean seriously, I'm talking about a 3 inch diff! I am sure you all can relate.

Finally, about phone calls. As much as mom LOVES then, dad detests them. She carries the hand set wherever she goes in order to catch it on the first half ring. I told Sheilah she needs a phone holster! Quick Draw LaVerne.

I would discourage anyone calling between 1 & 3:30--as that is their rolling nap times, also not much after 8 p.m. Better yet, send a letter. Dad does like those!

Ok, gonna lay low now in fear I discover another problem in this old house! This has been quite an experience...a bit tense and crotchety at times, but overall a goodnone, and I am glad I came.

Tomorrow morning: fresh brewed coffee!

Over and (soon) out!

Mouse in the house?

EEEK! When I moved the basement lazy boy to vacuum today, I discovered stuffing (perfect nesting material) and mouse droppings. Laid a super-sonic sticky surface in the corner, vacuumed the area and ran for my life!

Today was PT (I stayed in the front lobby in trying to segue mom to independence). She is now down to 2 rehab appts next week...dad will be happy about that. Mom is doing very well with the sticks, but still favors the walker in the house. She seems to be comfortable going up and down the stairs and is doing so a couple times a day...she moved like a gazelle to check out the mouse turds! One thing I noticed about the stairs is that they are not to code. They have a very short
depth, none of our feet fit on them. This is a bit dangerous.

Today we also hit up Food City for refills. She was pretty independent getting out of the car, walking in, and getting to her electronic go-cart (she tends to take the entire aisle, and hugs the corners tight...it is thrilling to watch. Figure the store has insurance). I feel she's good to go on wednesday to shop with dad.

It has rained a TON since being here...literally no oppty to do anything outside.

Think we're going to order a pizza for free delivery tomorrow before I leave. If they like it, they have a local source for delivery on a future date night!

A couple things I learned since being here: Food City freeze-dried instant coffee isn't 'that' bad...and if I don't see another CSI, Castle, Person of Interest, or any other investigative show, it will be a-ok with me!

24-hours and my shift will be over, they will be on their own. Not really sure how ready dad is for this, but such is life.
Signing off!

Marciah

P.S Norah, prob won't call that service from here...mom is super keyed in to what I'm doing, but will find that number to call from home.

Mike at Home

I made it home uneventful.  Listened to my USB, so have two more CDs left for the third book.  I was really relaxed even though I drove through rain past Jackson TN, then the weather cleared.  I still enjoy long drives.

As a point of interest, when I was there, Dad told me about SCHAS and how they charged him $42 to lean the house because he is relatively well off.  I saw a commercial about them and then looked them up on the internet.  I think it will be a Great Resaource if Mom can let go a little.

Travel Assistance

Marciah - I didn't bring this with me when I was there, but if you care to, give Schas a call (that's the company that's referred to her by her doc).  They have "delivery service" for those in need.  They are at 865.544.1710.  If Mom needs to be driven to the hospital because Dad can't do so, these guys can.  But don't know the logistics - do they need 1 day advance?  Is there a cost?  Do they wait till appt is over?  Ask Mom for the brochure - it's very definately NOT a quality brochure
, it's in her medical folder, but it is a company that services the "handicapped" - be it simple care taking, driving, home care, house care, cleaning services, etc.  I don't know if Mom would make the call herself....just putttin' it out there.

Loved your cleaning insight!  Kinda chuckled!  I can just see her there telling you how to do it!  You're doing a great job!  I'm sure you'll be sad in some small way after you leave....I know I was.  Kinda sad leaving Mom - I know she is enjoying the female companionship!

Bathroom Cleaning: 500-level!

Apparently I'm still at the 100-level of cleaning bathrooms. Mom watched me like a hawk...she has many unusual cleaning tactics. Thankfully I was well prepared and did everything she asked (however she did mutter "I usually do the toilet twice"--which I obliged).

Thankfully I wore my Nike dry-fit t-shirt because I sweat up a storm, partially due to nerves and my elevated b.p...and partially due to the sheer physical exertion!

I explained to her that the cleaners coming in the future MAY have different ways of doing things, and they are professionals! And, she might feel better not watching over them.

On a similar note, the plumber came to fix an apparent toilet leak...which he found no evidence of a prob, but replaced the 30-year-old seal. I convinced them that was a good idea anyway, so it wasn't a wasted trip. Let me just say mom REALLY enjoyed the company, and watched over his work carefully. Pretty sure she's got the next seal covered independently!

Off to transfer the sheets, think I aced linen changing...apparently my strong suit!

Marciah's In 'da House!

Things are going really well here. Got in yesterday (Tuesday) around 10:30 a.m., and Mike was able to pick me up and bring me to mom and dad's. I got a good orientation on the ride back...he left to go home 10 minutes after dropping me off.At this point mom and dad want to get there own breakfast, and most of their lunch. I am trying to balance supportive care while staying out of their way! Am trying to assess what support they may need in the future.Food shopping today, I got mom driving the electric cart. That went very well, she saw a couple of friends...and was happy to share her tales with the stock boy, deli girl, check out girl and bagger.PT today, they are upping her reps and are advising her to do pt at home sittingon a chair vs her bed.Tons of rain here today and yesterday, outside work is out. Mom seems to enjoy the help in the kitchen preparing dinner and cleaning up after. Dad even helped me with dishes tonight...i think he sees the writing on the wall when I leave saturday at 5.Thanks to chuck for talking me through this. I'm an official blogger now, thanks to my trusty I-pad and 3G!Will see what Thursday brings!marciah

Mike's Last Post

This occurred four days after what Norah just posted, so just take note.

M&D told me not to come in at 8:00 this morning.  I had to take Mom to PT at 2PM.  So, they told me to come in at 10:00.

I took Mom to the Post Office- Rondah the gowns are heading back to you!  Priority!

Mom when to PT and Did Great! The PT Specialist was amazed.  Mom walked with the sticks tremendously.  They took her outside and she aced it.  Up and down hills, up and down curbs EVERYTHING!.  They are planning to terminate her PT on the 20th after her appointment with Dr. Whitman (?).  The specialist suggested Mom ditch the walker except in the kitchen when she is carrying things and needs a more stable support.  In a week, it should be a stick.

I ate at the Peddler and did souvenir shopping tonight came back at 6:30 and M&D did the dishes and were watching Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy.  Marciah called and gave me her itinerary and she'll betaking over at noon tomorrow.  Then I am driving 22 hours home (in 2 days).

Mom is doing great and Dad is picking up the slack (but mutters that Mom is bossy and shouldn't get used to him helping as much as he is).

This was more vacation than working.  That is good, I really didn't strain my torn calf and they didn't notice the limp on the stairs or when I was vacuuming or blowing the driveway.

Norah's Overview from July 2 - July 7

Ahh-Haa!  I'm in!  Can do this at home, but not on my laptop!!!

Arrived Monday at 11am, just 2 short hours after Patrick and Andrew left.  They both greeted me warmly.  Didn't read the "blue book" for 3 hours till Dad said, "Are you going to read the book?"  I said, i will.  He said, "You have to read the book, you'll find out how to take care of us!"  I told him "I will!".  I reminded him that I was the rebel of the family and that if he wanted to do anything outside this book, go for it!  At that time, he said "Read the book.  You need to know what to do to take care of Mother."  So, I read the book, and found most everything on paper was already conversed to me on phone!  But, it made Dad happy!

Let's see....Monday - what did I do (it's 7 days later right now....!)?  Reheated Rondah's pizza for dinner, helped Mom with here exercises (Pat, you're right, her 2 second count is really 1 second!), walked the deck with her, unpacked, pretty much took it easy Monday.  Oh, forgot - I broke the kitchen sink spricket!  Dad's comment:  "Goddammit, why does every person who comes here break something?"  Also found that (although they can't hear fire detector battery beeps, they CAN hear cell phone beeps!  Dad got angry because my cell phone beeped ONCE!  I learned at that moment to turn off cell phone - put it on vibrate or on complete silence.

Tuesday, 7/3 - woke for breakfast at 7:30am (every morning).  Mom pretty much had everything ready.  NO TALKING DURING BREAKFAST!  They have to listen to their FOX news at 8am.  Did breakfast dishs and laundry before noon.  Laundry was so funny!  Had to toss all clothes down the stairs, then separate into 3 piles.  Mom had to SHOUT the "stains" out of their whites!  Picture that!  Too funny!  While loads of laundry are running, we stay downstairs and read books!  Mom sits on the couch with Grandma's red/blue blanket on her lap - it's her "comfort" blanket, she's comforted by it knowing Grandma is there with her!  Wow - was taken aback by that!  Was so glad to hear she keeps her Mother close by!

Went with Dad shopping - he drove.  He's good, but has little (or shoudl I say NO) patience!  Marciah - if you drive with him - accept the fact that he feels NO ONE should be on the road with him.  It's everyone elses fault for being on the road!  He owns it!

While in the basement, heard mice clipping along on the dropped ceiling in Dad's den.  Didn't know what it was at first, but when I found out Andrew heard them, I confirmed same!  No need to worry - they won't sneak down!

Lunch prep ALWAYS begins at 11:30, eat at Noon.  No change to that!

Went to PT at 1pm, met Melody - great gal!  Mom loves to gab at PT!  And Melody is extremely patient with her!  Mom needs to STOP TWISTING at the waist.  Marciah - if you're getting anything out of this, STOP her from twisting at the waist.  The screws aren't solidified in the bone yet.  Mom also needs to stand straight on the walker (tends to lean), but is getting better!  She also needs to start learning the sticks.  She's reminded me that surgery was just 18 days ago and that she's to be on the walker for a long period of time, but she's healing excellently!  She should stay on the walker, BUT, start practicing with the sticks more!  She used them on the stairs twice - did well, but she doesn't have a comfort level yet.  Dad wants her to drop the walker and get with the sticks, but he's not the one who's losing his balance....so we need to gently coax her to practice more with the sticks.

Took Mom to Sevierville on Tuesday - wanted to get her out of the house.  She like that.  She enjoyed the drive, the normalcy of being out.  IF you take her out, take a pillow to put behind her back so her incision isn't rubbing the back of the car seat.

Lost track of where I am.....don't have a book to remind me what I did, but did write it in the blue book!

Mom had friends come visit on Wednesday:  Elizabeth, Mildred and Roy.  Roy wanted to visit with Dad, took a lot to get Dad upstairs, but once he did, he was a pefect gentleman.  Mom so enjoyed the visit - had me go out and buy a cheesecake for the little gathering.

Thursday was another day at PT.  She really is doing well.

Cooking: Mom is great at telling you what to do and where to go to get things!  You may turn your back and roll your eyes, but you gotta give her credit - she knows exactly where things are and how to do it!  You'll even learn from her!  They save everything, too!

All in all - they are doing well.  Although there were 2 days Mom took tranquelizers:  the day her friends came, and the day I left.  The day I left, she told me Dad has absolutely NO idea on how to pay bills.  If anything happened to her, the bills would NOT get paid.  I asked her to put her accountant in charge, she said no.  I told her to give the responsibility to one of the kids to pay everything on-line.  Even bank on line.  What we finally came up with is she's putting a list together of all bills she pays: cable, water, heat, phone, grass cutters, doctors, etc (about 15 names) and will list account numbers, phone numbers, city/state.  I don't know who will get this, but I started it for her the day I left.  I don't understand why that came up, but it is concerning her.  Sheilah - maybe you can take the lead here and ask Mom if she's started working on the "steno book" Norah started up to list all her bill-paying accounts.

I changed Mom's bandages twice - and BOTH times each bandage was clean!  No spotting, no seepage - perfectly clean!  It relieved her to no end!!!

Mom HAS been gaining weight!  She loves yogart, smoothies, milk.  She gained 3 pounds the week I was there.  i left 2 smoothies for her after I left.  One for Mike and one for Marciah.

Oh, I checked with Food City and called PeaPod.  PeaPod does not have any affiliations in TN.  Food City doesn't have a delivery service, and I asked PT Melody if there is any service where food delivery is offered.  She said nothing in Gatlinburg (so if anyone wants to set up a business, here's an opportunity!).

I checked their shower - Mom showered by herself.  Dad came in and washed her back.  Their shower is very small, and is rounded.  No straight walls, all walls have curves.  There ARE two soap dishes in the wall that they hold onto for support.  I held on to them as well to ensure it's a good hand support - only problem is that there is NO lip to the soap dishes, it's just a knotch in the wall (for soap), but nothing to prevent them from slipping.  It's an "L" shap knotch, but without a lip, their fingers can slip from it.  However, it IS bettehr than nothing.

Dad brought up a good point about the stair lifts - it comes out 14" from the side of the wall - that's 14" taken away from them coming up the stairs. He doesn't like that.  I don't know if the lift is necessary.  Sure, it's a great idea for the purpose it's meant for, but they both use the stair rails to pull themselves up.  Those rails are built very well and are a great support.

The bringing groceries upstairs is the big concern - here's what I told Mom:  Hire the maid Olgel's use (a Spanish gal).  On the day the maid is there, go shopping.  Have the maid bring up the groceries.  She's considering.  Their hired help stole a knick-knack from Mom's dresser on the one and only day they had her and they stopped the service.  Now considering next-door neighbor's (Ogle) maid.

If OJ is to heavy - told them to buy frozen concentrate.  Mom said, "hmm, that's an idea".

Mom is getting buy in the kitchen pretty well.  You'd be surprised how well she's doing!  Marciah - you're the last one there.  You need to:
  • Ensure she doesn't twist
  • Help her with the sticks - not to replace the walker, just to get her comfortable to use them
  • Help her lift kitchen items - she shouldn't be lifting and putting excess weight on her back
  • Give her encouragement - remind her how well she's doing
  • Remind Dad that Mom isn't 100% balanced yet - she needs the walker to keep her balance
  • Sweep the deck daily
  • Blow the driveway so she can ge in/out of the car
  • Walk the stairs with her - be in front when going down, and behind when going up
  • Cook or watch her cook
  • bring lots of books because there is lots of quiet time
  • Ignore Dad's continuous degradation of people - Dad is still Dad - he puts down every person he sees on TV or on the road.  Sad, I wish he had more kindness in him.
However, there were 3 moments I saw Mom and Dad hold hands, or stand next to one another in a loving, kind moment.  Seriously - was good to see.

I was glad to have spent my 5 days with them (Mon thru Sat).  I was sad to leave Mom - I think she really enjoyed my company.  We had many heart-to-hearts, and I think she had fun!  She was able to talk frank with me.  It was good time, well spent.

Norah's Test Blog - 7/8/12

blah, blah, blah...did it work?

Sunday Night

I bet you all are getting tired of my vacation down here!  I came back and Mom did the sheets and towels and all I needed to do was dry and fold.  She is getting around almost normal.  She is still a little dependent on the walker, and Dad thinks it is because she doesn't have motivation to ge off of it.  I think I agree with Dad.  I overheard her talking to Dr. Pat and she said she was told that she'd be on the walker for 8 weeks, so she isover half way through.

Cooked Mexican Meatloaf.  Marciah, don't worry if you don't cook, she'll tell you everything you need to do and know.  Doing it her way is the easiest thing to do.  Also, thank Patrick.  e convinced Dad that using the dishwasher is an okay thing to do.  I rinsed tonight's dishes in preparation to washt htem by hand.  Dad came in and said to put them in the dishwasher.  Patrick did it twice and now Dad likes it because he doesn't have to dry.

Tomorrow I get to sleep in.  They don't want me back until 10:00AM because I have to tak Mom to PT in the early afternoon.  Marciah- Bring Plenty to Read!!! The thing they like is Peace and Quiet.

Sunday Morning

Went to Church this morning.  Got home at 8:25 and they were ready to go.  Mom walked down the stairs through the garage to my Explorer.  WITH THE STICKS!!!!!   She then walked from the parking space (not a handicap one since I didn't bring it with me) up the stairs into the pew.  At communion, she took one  of the two, held onto Dad's arm and went to communion.  She then went back to the car.  Dad wanted to reward her, so to McDonalds we went.  They both ordered Suasage Biscuits with Eggs and we went home.  We got home and all she got was a biscuit with out sausage and eggs.  I was going to go back and argue, but mom said she would just put butter and jam.  I left at 11:45 because I had to get something at Ace for the afternoon and they were closed until 12:30.  Don't they know my work morning ends at noon?

2nd Shift Saturday 7/7

Had Corned Beef Hash W/Poached Egg.  Open two cans of Corned Beef, put in Pyrex Dish and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.  Put a depression in the corned beef for each egg.  Put a raw egg in depression and bake for 15 minutes more until egg white is firm.

Watched Cubs with Dad, ate, did dishes, watched dishes (Mom dried!) watched Lawrence Welk and went home at 8:00 PM.  Dad seemed happy for me to go- it is back to his routine!  Momwas cool about it.

Last night Norah got me hooked for wanting a McFlurry.  Went to McDonald's on the way home and their ice cream machine was broken.  I found an Ice Cream place across the street from the Hotel (Fairfield Inn & Suites).  A (at least 4 scoop) waffle cone for $3.32!  I am happy!

Tomorrow is Church, Dad wants me there at 8:29 AM so we can leave at 8:30.

Mike's 1st Four Hour Shift!

Mike Here!

I arrived last night at 7:30 PM.  Went to the houe and read the "book".  Marciah, read the book first thing.  Dad wants everyone to read the book.  It was the second thing he said after "Hi".  Mom looks Great, but is depending on the walker too much (according to Dad).  Wen tto the hotel room at 1000 PM.

I showed up at the house at 8:00 AM and Norah left at 9:00.  After stripping the beds and bringing them down to the laundry room, Mom wanted me to blow down the driveway, so I did.  When I finished, I started shoveling the compost off the street (the leaves never cleared the street, so there is four feet of leaves and compsot upt three feet deep on the edge of the street).  The compost is so good, I am tempted to buy some plastic buckets and bring it back to Albuquerque.  While doing this, Dad came out to check the mail.  He asked, What the hell I was doing.  I told him and he said he'd rather I fix the sprayer that was broken on the kitchen sink, so Mom can wash her hair.  I told him Mom said that H&L was going to come out and fix it.  He asked if I knew how and I said yes, screw off the nozzle and put a new one on.  He said then do it!.

While fixing it, Mom asked if it was done yet.  How cute!!  After fixing it, I asked if they wanted me to stay in the hotel or at the house.  Dad said it was up to Mom.  Mom asked what was the benefit for me staying at the hotel, and I said a bigger bathroom, nicer shower and more comfortable bed.  I also said they can get back to a normal life.  They said stay at the hotel and that my "work hours" are 8:00 to 12:30 and 4:00 to 8:00.

I didn't tell them I tore my calf muscle or tendon in my calf three weeks ago.  I have a Cam walking boot on it most of the time.  When I drove cross country, it felt great, and I didn't bother changing back into the boot until I stopped for the night.  It felt okay when working today.  I was a little unsteady on the stairs, but by the time I left, I was doing okay.  Mom & Dad didn't notice the limp.  Now I get to soak it in a hot tub twice a day when I am back at t he hotel and rest with the leg up.  I now notice how hot the laptops get when they are on your laptop.

Well, I am heading back to the house for my second four hour shift.  I plan to pick up some pictures and convert them but will try to blog between shifts.

Bailey Update POD# 4 Pictures

Pictures of Bailey on day 4 after surgery. :(. He does seem to be getting stronger every day. Two weeks of restricted activity - no running, jumping, walks, etc.... Bailey has to wear the cone of shame so he doesn't chew on his incision. After two weeks, he gets to do daily physical therapy with the Salt Lake Chuck. Hopefully, he will be able to take his favorite hike to Dog Lake in September. As much as he hates the cone of shame, he never gives us the finger or should I say paw. Like Laverne, he will growl or bark at us when he becomes frustrated. Too bad Laverne and Bailey can't recover together. It has been much harder to take care of Bailey then Laverne and Fred after the first few days of surgery.

July 2

Just talked to Norah and Mom.   Pat & Andrew left at 10 am and Norah arrived at 11 am, good timing!  She's reading through the Blue Book to see what she's been missing.  It took her 12 hours to drive in (left Sunday 10 am but stopped 3 hours outside of Gatlinburg in Berria (?sp) listening to Books on Tape.  Helped Mom with PT at home; mom will do PT Mon, Th and Fri this week as July 4 is a holiday.   Norah brought a HotSpot from work, so can connect on the internet for work.  Still couldn't figure out the blog part.  Heated Rondah's pizza for dinner.
Mom's wound sounds good.  SteriStrip is coming off, so Norah can clip the loose ends off; she'll also cover the upper scab if it starts to catch.  Mom's spending more time outdoors, which sounds good.  She's been walking on the deck with the ski poles.  Now we need to get her to eat more food to gain back the weight she's lost.
Norah will look into PeaPod or Food City deliveries.  Mom helped Norah fold the linen from Pat & Andrew, tomorrow it's clothes laundry from M&D, about a week's work.  Norah will be busy.
Thank you all for your "shifts"!  It sounds like Mom is making steady progress, and they told me that they appreciate the way we've all chipped in, despite what they say!
Rondah, send us a picture of poor Bailey!

Pat's Post from Sat and Sunday! POD 10 & 11

Hi all –
Since I was not able to blog, I decided to crate this word document to inform you of the happenings down here with mom and dad.  If anyone wants to attach this to the blog, please do so.  I feel that it is easier for me to write this way with a full keyboard instead of the hunt peck method with my large thumbs.
Thursday June 28, 2012
·         Andrew and I arrive at 8:00 pm met with mom, dad and Sheilah.  Took transition picture with Sheilah and she posted it on the blog.  Reviewed mom’s treatments and went over daily procedures – time, quantity and reps.  Discussed what needs to be done on daily basis etc.

Friday June 29, 2012
·         Heard beeping in house, Sheilah and I determined it to be a battery in smoke detector.  Asked mom and dad about the beeping noise and they could not here it.     Asked when the last time they changed the battery and they said 2 ½ years ago.  Decided it was time to change the batteries.  Andrew replaced the batteries later in the day and confirmed it was last replaced in January 2010.
·         Replaced furnace filter in hallway by bedrooms.  Last replaced was February 2012.
·         Vacuumed the upper level.  Not only is the vacuum heavy, but the suction is so great that it is difficult to pull back and forth to vacuum.  Can someone else please concur?
·         Andrew took Sheilah to the airport and evidently had a good visit with Sheilah. ·         Went to Physical Therapy today and Chuck had the walker raised 1”.  Mom is walking more erect now and is able to use the walker for exercising and get better effect of the exercise with the walker at the higher position.
·         Bought in the walking sticks as asked by Sheilah; mom refuses to use them because she is unsure on them.  Chuck had mom use the sticks to walk 100’ towards the door and back.  Chuck commented that she was doing quite well.  When I talked to mom after the session she said that she will refuse to use the sticks because she feels more secure with the walker.  I explained that we are not trying to get rid of the walker at this time, but we are trying to get her to use the sticks as the next support apparatus.  We do not expect her to go immediately from walker to sticks without any transition period between.  I than surprised her and told her that I just added that to her daily exercise program, she is to walk with the walking sticks twice a day on the deck back and forth for a period of time that she feels comfortable.  I hope that isn’t too much to ask of her.
·         Chuck added another stretching exercise to work on in addition to her other ones; it is to be done to strengthen the back part of the calves.  I placed the sheet with the others to work on when exercising.
·         Reviewed Dads prescriptions with the pharmacist at Food City.  Doctor renewed all prescriptions at the same time so that they all will renew at the same time next year.  Mom and Dad are confused why that the prescription says one more refill and the pharmacist needs to contact the doctor.  Prescription had expired.  Pharmacist says that if they order their prescriptions one week before they need them that he would contact the doctor to renew the script.  I explained that to mom and dad and they will order the prescriptions a week early now.
·         At dinner time, Dad suggested to mom to get her hair done, he said “I only want you to look the best that you can so that you will feel better, more back to normal”.  Mom said that she washed her hair with Sheilah and that she will wash and set her hair tomorrow.
·         During her exercises this evening, mom cursed me out a half dozen times and than shot me with her finger gun another half dozen times.  She said that she wanted Sheilah back, “Sheilah was tough, but you are absolutely difficult”.
·         Seepage on the bandage this evening was rectangular in shape a little larger than a postage stamp.  Since Sheilah thought that the exercising was the cause of the seepage, I suggested that we exercise earlier tomorrow (preferably before dinner) wait until after dinner to change the dressing and see how well the bandage looks Sunday morning.  No comment from mom at this time.  Does this idea have any merit or not?
·         I was pressing on the sides of the incision above the bandage this evening and while doing so, mom said “Ouch”.  I revisited the area and asked if it hurts and she said yes.  Is there going to be a tender area due to the incision?  I know with my knee surgery, if I hit my knee in a certain area I still get a sharp pain up and down my leg.  I am thinking that this is the pain mom is feeling when I checked this area out.  I will review this with her again tomorrow.
·         Andrew wanted to go miniature golfing, he felt the need to teach me a lesson on the golf links.  I asked if he wanted a 36 hole mini-tournament and he agreed.  Andrew wins the front 18 holes by 4 strokes, I win the back 18 holes by 5 strokes. I win the tournament by 1 stroke.  He is seeking security cameras to see if I was cheating.
·         Returned home after golf tournament and was greeted be the beeping noise that we thought was the fire detectors.  Will look tomorrow for that sound.

Saturday June 30, 2012

  • At breakfast this morning mom announced that she was able to roll over in bed without any pain last night.  Very promising news.
  • I asked mom how she was feeling this morning and she said that her legs were sore.  I explained to her that this was good and that when she doesn’t feel sore in the legs anymore that would mean she was better.  She did not like this answer, I think she wanted sympathy from me and I was not giving it to her.
  • Asked mom to do exercise at 9:00 am, she said that she was good enough to do them by herself.  I told her that we came down to help and to let us help.
  • Dad talked to her a few minutes and came to the kitchen where I was and said that she was ready to exercise.  He said that he did not realize how stubborn she could be.
  • Mom volunteered to use the walking sticks and we walked on the back porch for a few minutes.  She was able to go to the planter boxes on the railing and pull the dead plants.  I believe that she really enjoyed being outside.
  • Washed the Green Subaru.  Cleaned inside, outside and washed the windows.
  • Andrew was concerned that the oil light reminder was coming on in the Prius that we drove down here.  I asked Dad where the nearest Toyota shop or Jiffy Lube location was because Andrew wanted the oil changed.  According to Dad, the nearest location was Knoxville and that he has his oil changed at Wal-Mart.  I let Andrew know this and he volunteered to take the car in.  While waiting for the car, Andrew became hungry so he purchased some animal crackers and went outside to eat them.  A few moments later someone came out and asked him if he was hungry they would get him a sandwich.  Fortunately, he declined the southern hospitality and explained he was waiting for his car and thanked them anyway.
  • Mom was telling me how to make hotdogs for lunch and that she and dad had already eaten.  I looked at her and said that I have made hot dogs before and that I wanted to wait for Andrew.  Mom gives me the sigh that she does and gets up to walk out of the family room to the dining room where dad was walking out of the kitchen to the dining room.  Dad asked mom where she was going and said that she was going to take a nap.  Dad said that that sounded good and that he would take a nap with her.  I told them that I would be quiet and dad turned his head to me and said “You do that”.

Bailey

Sheilah taking care of Bailey is harder than taking care of mom

POD#9

Pat and Andrew have arrived! He is not a Blogger so asks that you text him at 1815 -342-0585 and he will respond to you. Andrew.bernard92@gmail.com might also work if I can teach Andrew how to blog in the next 30 min. Mom & Dad are doing well and getting more independent. Pat supervised an exercise session already, she is now able to hold positions for 2-3 seconds
Off to the airport now, adios!

Post-op day 8

Woke up today to find that mom and dad were up and already helping themselves to breakfast. A good sign. I stripped beds and started laundry. Then I helped mom do her exercises. Be careful that she holds positions for two seconds. She tends to swing up and down without contracting her muscle and keeping a position for the full two seconds.
Mom's dressing hasn't oozed over the past 6 hours. Maybe Pat can just use a bandaid before I leave. Dad brought out the garbage right on schedule. I cleaned up after breakfast and then made a few calls. Peter Nemeth is their lawyer and I urged dad to review their 20 year old will. No changes mind you; all he needs to assure that Assets and trust laws have not changed. Peter also does estate planning but
Dad is happy with his financial planner, a guy named Morris, who gave them the best 4-cup coffee mug ever. I'd take it home but have no room.
I forwarded you information on stair lifts; because of the angle, the stair lift would be three separate components each at $1500-$2000. There is a spiral stair lift option possibly $12-$15,000 and an elevator lift may be the best option after speaking to the sales clerks. Right now, dad does not want to make any decisions. I pointed out to him that this home improvement may be the best way to keep them happy at home.
I also spoke to my friend Dr. Bresee, who told me that dad's new cardiologist trained in MA. She is the wife of one of his partners. Dad does not want me to talk to her so I will defer to her any medical decisions for now.
Now I'll work on Grab Bars while they nap until Pat and Andrew come (next shift). Vacuuming next....can't believe how pleasant the house is despite the 90-95-100 degree heat they report on the news!!

Unrelated/Baileysurgery

Crazy how you worry and wonder when it comes to surgery. Again waiting to see if it is successful. Bailey blew out his acl playing frisbee. Doc will call when he is in recovery. Not much different than human. We can go visit if we want.

POD#7

Good day for Mom although she backed out of PT. she got dizzy after exercises and a dry sponge bath with dressing change, so napped while Dad and I went to the grocery store. Then Mom and I went to see Whiton, who showed me the MRI. He also told me that while at the hospital, a CRNA gave mom a sponge bath with back rub. Apparently Mom said "it felt really good, even better than an orgasm." So Dr. Whiton heard this from the RN and had to tell me. No wonder Mom was so popular!
We got the handicapped placard, that's taken care of. Then had Thai curry for dinner. After dinner, I blew not only the hickory nuts, but also trimmed the front bushes, blew the front yard, and swept the porch (again).
So now Mom's wound is only covered and steri-stripped on the lower half; the top 3 inches are healed. She cancelled PT as she was tired after going to Whiton and the courthouse (although didn't get out of the car.) She's doing her exercises well and getting stronger daily. Now playing with my iPhone watching TV then a book and bed.
Spoke to Marciah and Rondah, visit responsibilities will change as Mom gets better. Pat and Andrew coming in tomorrow for change of shift. Talk to you all later....

POD #6.5

Great news for all...I found that McDonalds has wifi so I was able to get some work done while slurping a strawberry lemonade. The library also has computers but they have limited hours.
Today I picked up the application for handicapped placards, went to Moore's office (spent 45 mins chatting southern style, that doesn't fly in Boston). Tomorrow we'll go to the courthouse and get a placard.
Exercises were good today. Mom's up and around more easily. She's sitting in Grandma's rocking chair which gives her good support. Dinner was easy: I did exactly what I was told to do (hamburger, potatoes from a box, green beans frozen and salad).
Didn't achieve my goals of pruning the front bushes but tomorrow's another day. I'm surprised how time flies...
Before I forget, just leave all egos at the door when you come. Everything has its place and you better not move it. They have their routine down pat and it's easier to just respect it. Dad wrote out the menus and shopping list for next week, tomorrow we'll go grocery shopping.
That's it for Tuesday...Wednesday promises to be busy with grocery shopping with Dad, visit with surgeon Whiton, courthouse then PT.
Rondah, we wish Bailey good luck with his surgery!

POD #6

A good morning, mom up & around. Finished with exercises and can 'feel the burn' ... She calls me a mean taskmaster, but she's getting back to routine. Off to the library with Dad while she naps, the Book that Rondah and Chuck started has been very helpful in this transition. The tactic over the.next few days will just to help them out when needed but not too much so they can resume their regular routines. Bitching, which they are getting back to doing well, is remarkably a good sign!

POD #5

Just figured how to work this Blog thing. 10PM and light's out--this is the life!
Mom had a successful day at PT--did well on her exercises and got some new ones including upper arm stretches. Walked well about 25yards in the parking lot to PT. Tired now after a pain pill. She is getting a lot of calls from bridge friends and others--their 64th wedding anniversary. Rondah, I started perseverating about dinner at 4PM but just heated up leftovers which will still last another day. Saw Dr. Moore at PT too. Re antigravity chair, the PT person didn't know what it was, certainly not a Pt thing. It sounds more like a cardiac chair, which Mom doesn't need. She's doing better than I had expected, and PT Chuck said to bring the hiking polrs on Friday to see if she is ready to graduate from the walker. Tomorrow I'll help wash her hair and swing by the library for placard paperwork. Dad will shop on Wed, I'll hickory nut--blow out the driveway. I also want to prune some too. And so ends my first shift!

Norah's First Try

Had a nice chat with Rondah while driving home from Ken & Amy's reunion.  Rondah was surprised at Mom's progress and told me we'll be busy while providing care, but still have time to ourselves.  Got some good tips from her and am looking forward to time spent with them.

The Doctor is in the House

Sheilah has arrived to assist Laverne with her recovery. Laverne has a physical therapist appointment today at 1PM. Sheilah changed her bandage and reported that the incision looked good.

Today is Fred and Laverne's 63rd wedding anniversary. Incredible.

Fred may never forgive Rondah for freezing his KFC. Hopefully, she can one day visit again if she promises never ever to freeze KFC.

Rondah and I are off to SLC. My dog or son #1 goes into surgery Thursday. In some cases his recovery may be easier than Laverne's because we can confine him to our laundry room. Fred replied that he might try keeping Laverne in the laundry room too.

I will be happy if I never see another hickory nut in my life. Off to the airport and hopefully a safe trip home.

Goodbye and thank you,

Chuck

Picture of Rondah

Testing camera

Sheilah is now in charge

I am the ruler of this blog and Chuck is extremely happy to give this shit up.

Mass

Attended mass at St. Mary's with Fred today while Laverne stayed home with Rondah. Fred has got the church routine down to a science. He knows where to park so he can get out fast, and knows where to sit so he can be first in line for communion, avoid crying babies and get out fast.

When we arrived home, Rondah was complaining that her mom was not being a good patient. Rondah's biggest complaint was that she was not doing the physical therapy exercises the correct way. This from a former back surgery patient who was the biggest pain in the ass about doing her exercises correctly or even doing them at all when she was recovering. I guess what comes around goes around. I was a little shocked when I saw Laverne bend down to pick up something from the floor. Probably not a good idea to do a few days after back surgery.

The KFC Controversy

We bought a 10 piece take home bucket of KFC chicken per request for dinner on the first night we arrived. Fred loves KFC. You should have seen the look of abject horror on his face when he was told by Rondah that she froze the left over chicken. He likes it readily available for lunch or dinner. Warning: Do not put any KFC you buy in the freezer or you may be sent packing and left out of the will.

First Night Back Home

Laverne seemed to have a good night sleep waking up twice to go potty. Yup, I'm not going there again. Rondah will stay home with Laverne while I take Fred to mass today. I will be picking up Sheilah at the Knoxville airport today at 2 PM.

Laverne Home Part Two

Laverne used a walker to get into the house. She walked up the steep sidewalk and went through the front door. Climbed up the stairs using the walker like a pro. We put her the bed so she could rest. The first priority was to make sure she got caught up on any of her medications she did not take at the hospital today per the discharge instructions.
I refuse to discuss waste products and bowel movements in this blog anymore so I will skip the logistics of where the portable commode will be placed during the day and evening.
The big drama was finding a place in Gatlinburg to fill her pain medication on a Saturday. The pharmacy at Food City was closed but I got to the Walgreens in Gatlinburg right as they were shutting down the pharmacy. I only ran over a few southern baptists (Romney supporters anyway) on the way to the drug store. I don't think she will need all 30 pills and since they have a street value of $75 per pill, I was tempted to hang outside the Walgreens in downtown Gatlinburg and become a drug dealer. I could make enough after selling a few pills to afford a couple of steaks at the Peddler and have some money left over for a couple of t-shirts and boxes of bark. If I got caught, the police might confiscate my phone and who would entertain you with such witty prose. I know what you're thinking, I should change witty to shitty prose.
Laverne ate dinner with us in the kitchen. We outfitted her walker with some tennis balls to aid mobility. She is resting comfortably in bed. Fred is happy to have her back at home.
In a week or two, she may be able to hike up to Mt. LeConte.

Have a great day!

Laverne Home

We got word around 1PM that Laverne was going to be discharged from the hospital. Fred, Rondah, and I drove to the LeConte Medical Center to pick her up. The only medication prescribed was hydro codone for pain as needed. She has follow-up visit with the doctor on Wednesday. Laverne will need to call his office on Monday to set-up the appointment. According to Laverne, her surgeon usually schedules the follow-up appointment for 3 weeks out but is scheduling her earlier so he can meet Dr. Bernard. Her first physical therapist appointment is scheduled for Monday @ 1 PM. The PT prescription indicates she will be doing PT 3 times per week. She got into the car with ease and the ride home was in uneventful.

Waiting

Still no word on whether she will be released today or tomorrow. Laverne called and requested that we wait to come over until she talks to the doctor. No idea when the doctor will visit. Laverne seems concern that there was minor seepage from the incision although this is very normal. Also, no bowel movement to report. We should no more information this afternoon.

Question

To poop or not to poop that is the question? We shall find out shortly. Shakespeare did not have to deal with this shit when he was writing, did he?

Bodily Functions

So, how many "Hells Bell" or "No Shit Sherlock" or "Holy Crap Batman" have you guys gotten so far?

Is she still passing gas?

Thanks for the Poop Scoop.

Truth be told, thanks for the updates..I have read them all and they have been very informative.  I hope I can remember how to get back in to get the latest update.

Day 3 Update

Received a call from Laverne updating us on her bowel movement or should I say lack of one. The doctor will not release her from the hospital until she has a s$@". I suggested we sneak in some white castle hamburgers for her to chow down. They usually slide in and slide right out! Bowel movement accomplished. Why does this blog always turn to crap?
Her own personal walker and commode were delivered to her room this afternoon. I joked that we might need to tie the commode to the roof of the car if it doesn't fit inside the trunk. Can you picture the four of us driving from Sevierville with a toilet on top of our roof!
She reported that she walked farther than previous attempts in her afternoon PT session today.
The bottom line: No discharge from Laverne than no discharge from the hospital.

Day Three Hospital Visit Update

Arrived at the hospital to find Laverne walking the hallways under the guidance of a physical therapist and the aid of a walker.  He taught her how to use the walker on steps.  She looked great.  Still walks hunched over and will need to practice walking straight up.  I drove back to their house to get a couple of walking sticks that Rondah used during her recovery.  The PT wanted to work with her this afternoon using the walking sticks. She is still insisting that she be allowed to use her wooden stick instead.  We were kicked out of the room so she could take a shower.  The highlight of the trip was when the Reverend Ely came in to ask her if she needed anything.  I guess Ely had only one working eye.  He put his hand on her head and gave her a come Jesus.  He basically cracked a joke that today's doctors did not heal folks as quickly as the original guy.  Fred was concerned that she might leave the hospital as a Baptist.

The secretary at St. Mary's called and was going to ask Laverne if she wanted communion brought the hospital bed.  I advised that if she was going to do that to make sure she tells them to leave the collection basket at home.

Fred said he was afraid that Laverne may grab a taxi from the hospital, go to church, and take a taxi back to the hospital.

The doctor had not visited her yet.  So, we do not know if she will be released tomorrow.  We will keep you updated.

Sheilah's Email: June 21, 2012

Just talked to mom who confirmed:

1) remembering the conversation

2) seeing a mouse in a good sock and throwing the sock/mouse in the garbage.

3)This apparently did happen in the laundry chute....

She sounds great....I'm having problems getting on the blog page via google blogger, but I'll keep trying.  This trip might be my impetus to buying a smart phone...I'll have all week to learn how to use it.

Rondah's First Entry - Last Night's Visit

This is Rondah. It was nice seeing mom tonight. She had fun talking to Sheilah tonight. We left around 9:15 PM and she was ready for bed. I hope she gets a good night sleep. Stopped in Gatlinburg on the way home for bark. Gatlinburg was real busy tonight.

Second day update

Laverne talked to the doctor today.  He thinks she will be discharged Friday or Saturday. A big issue for her was not being able to sleep last night because she had to go to the bathroom every two hours.  The doctor told her that was because bone was constricting her bladder before the surgery and now nothing was pressing on it so she had to go a lot. OK, TMI.
She also seems a little concerned with the physical therapy instructions left with her today. I'm still not sure why. She was told she will need to do PT after being released from the hospital.  She will be doing it at a PT who is located on the 2nd floor above the Italian restaurant that they like to go to but is now closed.

Good night

Second Day Hospital Visit Update

Laverne was sitting up in her chair when we arrived. Unfortunately, the doctor had not been in yet to visit so many of our questions remained unanswered. The physical therapist had worked with her in the morning. She was able to walk down the hallway (100 feet) with her walker. The PT gave her a list of exercises she will need to do at home. The physical therapist stated that one foot seemed weaker than the other.
She was in a great mood during the entire visit. The only pain medication she is taking is Naproxen 500 mg twice a day.  A concern is her blood sugar was high.  Her blood sugar was a little low in the morning so she had a couple of glasses of OJ which probably caused the problem.
She received balloons from Norah.  Rondah and I plan to visit her tonight.  Fred said after seeing Laverne today, he thought that Laverne should have done the surgery earlier.  We are all slightly optimistic that she will be released either tomorrow or the next day.

Arrived at the hospital.

Shower

Rondah took a shower in the downstairs bathroom and wanted me to report that it works and has good water pressure, doesn't leak, and doesn't spill out on the floor.  Soap is in the right corner back of the shower.  We will leave shampoo and conditioner in the shower.  Need to bring a blow dryer.

I cannot believe I just wrote this shit.  I actually dictated that verbatim from what Rondah told me.  You've got to be kidding me.  She was actually being serious.  Mice eating girls underwear and shower pressure.  This blog has gone to hell.

Laverne Bernard's secret code name on the board in the surgery waiting room.

HIPPA Violation

This is just to notify everybody that I could possibly be jailed and labeled as a criminal for reporting in a public forum the details on Laverne'surgery because of HIPPA violations.  Maybe, I will meet my hero, that violent monkey wrencher, Tim DeChristopher, in prison.  I will try to give everyone else user rights today to this blog so you can opine regarding Laverne's surgery or should we say her recovery.  Please be warned that you can also be jailed if you choose to accept this invitation to write in this blog for HIPPA violations.

White Sox Win!

Alright this has nothing to do with Laverne's surgery except that Fred was watching the Cubs and Sox game last night after dinner and Mike reported watching two innings of the game while talking to Laverne.  It gave this lone southsider (except for Bob) a chance to gloat.  The lovable losers (Cubs) are in last place again.  GO WHITE SOX!

Mike's Phone Call

I saw the number and called her at 8:45 PM her time.  She was in a great mood and all by herself.  She sent Dad and the Curtins home.  She doesn’t know anything from the Post-Op because they talked to Dad and Rondah.  We watched two innings of the Cubs-White Sox game and talked .  I think she was still on pain killers because she talked about bowel movements and passing gas and mice eating the crotch of the girls’ underwear in Des Plaines.

Phone Call Update

Fred, Rondah, and I talked to Laverne on the phone tonight around 7 PM.  She is doing great.  Laverne had a solid dinner - hamburger, potato's or as us Irish call it tayto's.  According to Laverne, she has not needed any further pain medicine.  The goal is to get her on the same regiment of medication she was taking before she went into the hospital.  Physical therapy will begin tomorrow morning as well as an update from the doctor.

Home to take a nap

Left the hospital so we could give Laverne a chance to take a nap.  All vitals are in good shape.  Pain seems to be under control.  Took Fred back home so he could take a nap as well.

Phone Number & Room Number

Laverne's direct phone number (865) 446-7335.

Post-Surgery Consultation

The doctor said the surgery went great.  The only thing he was concerned with was her bone was very soft and he was afraid of breaking one or more of them during the surgery.  The older you get, the softer the bones.  Fortunately, all went well and nothing broke.  He believes that she will be in the hospital for two days for recovery and should not need any formal physical therapy.  She will just need to walk daily at home.

Arrived at LeConte Medical Center

Arrived at 5:30 AM at the LeConte Medical Center.  Had to go to the emergency room entrance. Hospital staff were very pleasant and got her in early.  Fred pushed Laverne back in the wheel chair to the pre-surgery waiting area.  Very cool fact:  They have been married 63 years.  Laverne & Fred seem to be doing great.  The hospital entrance reminds me of a Wyoming or Montana lodge.  Very nice facility.

Off to the Hospital

4 AM and getting ready to take Rondah's mom to the Sevierville hospital.  She needs to check in at 6 AM.  How do you spell Sevierville??????  Rondah's mom is Laverne Bernard.  Hope all goes well.
